Yo, did some layout changes to try and make it cleaner. I much prefer this version to the last.
Dare I say, it might be THE definitive crest. At least in concept, if everyone is digging the layout I'd get in there and start working up the ACTUAL nice cool drawing.
Lemme know what you guys think. It follows the rules of blazon (that is, official heraldry customs), and incorporates all of the symbolism that we want here. Unless I've forgotten something. Here's a breakdown of that symbolism and a bit of my own...
The Bow and 6 arrows stands first and foremost for our last name. HUNT duh. The 6 arrows represent all of the hunt family siblings. Red is the color of blood, over a field of gold representing honor. In heraldry, the top and (viewer) left of the shield are regarded as more important/honorable, so I've placed this key symbol here for that reason.
In the upper right corner sits a bunch of Barley (the long ones), and a bunch of Hops (the lil guys), which are the main ingredients to most beers. Beer (and alcohol in general) has had a profound impact on all of our lives. It is colored gold to closely match its described "golden color" as well as reinforce the idea that beer is the "brew of the gods" or some such. It is placed over a field of red to represent anger or intensity, and subtly imply caution to show that this isnt always a good thing.
In the bottom field, we have a Fantastical Golden Horned Owl. The owl is a hunter, alluding to our family name. Also, it often represents wisdom or scholarly studies. And specifically sometimes books and or knowledge gained from books. This is a subtle nod to dads profession as a librarian.
In its mouth is clutched a red snail to represent the tardiness that we have ALL inherited from the old man. The owl's talons are colored red for blood (ie hunt), and its horns are colored red mostly to look cool. The antlers could stay gold perhaps...
The golden owl is over a field of black. Black is said to represent authority, power, strength and sophistication... but also simply references night for the owl.

why are there 2 owls? maybe just the one in the shield?
ReplyDeletethe shield is the MAIN element in the coat of arms. if we all dig the owl it should absolutely be on the shield. mostly because its a cool animal and gives more visual interest.
ReplyDelete"the crest" is the part that sits on top of the helmet. it usually isnt shown alone, and often times restates some of the information in the shield itself.
for example : http://huntingforthecrest.blogspot.com/2010/12/my-post.html take a look at your post here. the first coat of arms has a tree in escutcheon on the shield, and repeated as a main element of the crest.
BUT, this is just my opinion. I could totally work up a version of the achievement with only one owl, either on shield or on crest. lemme know!
hey dude, i like the crown.
ReplyDeletebtw, have you thought about angles instead of squares for the hops and arrows.. i saw you try it just with the owl but not the other way.. and i like owl with gold antlers instead of red.. what about a black snail? just throwin this out there
